视频描述: [主讲人: Prof. Mikle D. (Mike) Ledgerwood] [时间: 2012-11-19 18:00:00] n this presentation, I’ll speak about many different aspects of world languages and cultures in the United States that I think will be of interest to Chinese University students. I’ll give first a summary of the “ethnic makeup” of the current United States and indicate which languages are spoken throughout the country and by how many. Secondly, I’ll discuss how language attrition occurs in immigrants to the U.S., and present the concept of the “melting pot” and discuss its complexity for American culture as well as discussing how different generations of immigrants view their heritage language. I will then continue to explain how, why, and when Americans learn foreign language (languages other than English) and how Americans select which language(s) to study. I’ll use the example of my own University (Samford University) since we teach fourteen modern languages (fifteen, including English as a Second Language) and three ancient languages.  Finally, I’ll give some examples of trends in which languages have become more and less popular recently as well as what the U.S. Government considers “strategic languages”.
