Power amplifiers are the key components of any wireless transmitters which their requirements mainly consist of the absolute achievable output power levels in conjunction with highest efficiency, linearity and recently broad bandwidth performances to be used in multi standards and multi frequency bands communication systems. They usually impact the overall performance of wireless transmitters in terms of energy consumption and quality of signal. This talk will review S parameter based designed linear amplifiers, large signal amplifiers mainly classes A, AB, B and C. Recently proposed continuous mode PA concept to achieve broadband characteristics will be explained and two examples of continuous mode PAs; class-J and continuous class F will be also presented. Switching mode amplifiers will be also reviewed with the focus on class D and Class E. Toward the end of the talk, Doherty amplifiers will be briefly explained along with their design challenges and how mitigate them using digital signal processing techniques.
